Fosseway Farmhouse
When the owners of Fosseway Farmhouse saw SGM Construction’s craftsmanship locally, they commissioned us to create an oak-framed orangery extension. The project focused on the careful and seamless integration of traditional materials with modern glazing and expert structural design. This case study explores how the new bespoke orangery enhances the home’s spatial quality while creating a seamless connection to the outdoors.
Project Overview
Our client contacted us to discuss the construction of an orangery at Fosseway Farmhouse after spotting our sign board from another local job. This project involved the design and construction of a bespoke, oak-framed extension to blend in with the property’s aesthetics. The orangery needed to be carefully integrated into the existing dwelling to enhance the spatial quality and the connection to the surrounding garden landscape.
Scope of Works
While working on period dwellings, we often encounter significant architectural features or hidden structural challenges that require an expert approach. One of the challenges with this extension was the fact that the existing chimney was four and half brick leaves thick. A typical chimney thickness is usually two brick leaves. Therefore, an ordinary RSJ design would not have adequately supported the additional brick leaves. Working closely with the structural engineer and architect, we ensured this bespoke structural design supported the additional weight. Our skilled team made sure the space blends in harmoniously with the extension’s intended flow.
The Result: A Timeless, Bespoke Orangery
The completed orangery extension will successfully deliver a high-quality, multifunctional living space. It will not only enhance the usability of the property as a home, but it will also strengthen the room’s relationship with the garden. By combining traditional oak framing with contemporary glazing, this will result in a timeless yet modern addition, tailored to the character of Fosseway Farmhouse.
